Post subject: `98 escort 2.0L fuel pump, filter or ignition coil module?

| I have a 1998 Ford Escort 2.0L SOHC with split port injection. The car was running fine until I filled up. About an hour later it stalled. It will fire right up but when I put it in gear it stalls again(but again will fire right up). I do not have any "idiot lights" on and I can hear my fuel pump cycle on when I turn my key. The same exact thing happened 2 months ago so I put in new plugs and some fuel injector cleaner and it ran fine after awhile. I just added some more inject. cleaner and HEET to see if it would do the trick but runs the same. Someone told me that the 10% ethanol gas I put in would break up debris in the tank and plug things up. I saw a post earlier that described my problem and the answer was the coil module, but my car does not have the check engine light on. Also, this happened before then started working again, is this a sign something is getting ready to go out? HELP!

Having purchased a non-Ford vehicle that I did not know had sat in a
dealer's lot for almost a year with a 1/4 tank of gas, can attest to how a
tank's debris can clog a fuel filter real quick. Gives a new meaning to the
term "stop and go". Letting the vehicle sit for awhile usually resulted in
starting up again (clogged filter again). After changing the fuel filter
numerous times which temporarily fixed it, I replaced the gas tank and fuel
filter at the same time. No problems since.

sounds like you may have water in the tank put a lot of dry gas and
change the filter a couple of times and it should be fine then >> Stay informed about: `98 escort 2.0L fuel pump, filter or ignition coil module? |

If it runs fine but doesn't idle properly, it's probably your idle air
control valve (IAC) that's malfunctioning. A common problem on
these cars, and it won't throw a code unless the IAC is physically
broken or missing.
You can get around the problem temporarily by propping the
throttle open with a very thin shim of some material at the
throttle plate stop. Just look on the throttle body for whatever
keeps the throttle plate from closing completely. >> Stay informed about: `98 escort 2.0L fuel pump, filter or ignition coil module? |

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! Took fuel filter out and check pump flow.....not much it turned out. Pulled fuel pump and found a screw missing and a loose screw on the top plastic coupling unit. I wasn't letting any pressure build up. Found some screws a little larger and put it back together. Runs great now. Thanks for everyones help and advice, trully appreciated! >> Stay informed about: `98 escort 2.0L fuel pump, filter or ignition coil module? |
