Hey -- did you ever resolve this? My 95 trooper (manual trans, 4WD, 6 cyl) just did the same thing -- for the 3rd time. First two times I took it to the shop and they said nothing was wrong with it -- they gave it back and it was fine. I didn't ask them how they fixed the jam. Now I don't want to pay for the shop to do something I can do.
For me, it happened (all 3 times) when I backed up with the engine off. I get in the habit of rolling backwards down the driveway, and starting it as it's rolling. No more...
