Hey, I've got a problem with my 4-runner.
Year: 86
Transmission: Automatic
Engine: 22RE (4cyl)
4x4
Anyways, this issue is an on and off kind of thing. The problem is that
just randomly the truck will idle verrry low at a stop when in "drive" and
be on the verge of stalling. Pushing the shifter into "neutral" lessens the
effect so that it slowly returns to a normal idle at a stop. The whole truck
shakes and the engine starts to sputter and shake and sound like its gonna
stall, but it hasn't yet. However, nothing seems to be wrong when driving.
It drives pretty normal. When this happens I would usually just go for a
little drive on an open highway and just try and clear out the engine and it
would seem to work and the truck would run normal again. Now however, the
problem is starting to recurr and it is pissing me off. Another thing that I
noticed is that it would seem to happen after a series of really heavy
rains, so I don't know if water is somehow getting into my fuel or what???
Any suggestions or any help at all would be so greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks >> Stay informed about: 86 4-Runner 22RE about to stall at a stop HELP! |

Try cleaning the throttle body. It gets carboned up and causes a low
idle. >> Stay informed about: 86 4-Runner 22RE about to stall at a stop HELP! |

I cleaned the throttle body out yesterday, it was definitely pretty gunked
up with stuff and took me about 15 minutes to get everything from black so
silver again. Anyways, I just wanted to know whether anyone knew if the
effect will be a drastic, immediate result, or if it takes a day or so. I
started her up and went for a short cruise and it did seem a bit smoother,
but still a bit shaky. Any other small things I could do like cleaning the
throttle body that could help with the idling? Can I raise the idle level?
Thanks!

You need to cean the MAF(mass air flow) maybe is that what you mean
when you said that you clean the TPS but if u dont get immediate
result then u should need to replace the TPS and get check the oxygen
sensor. Try also to find loose hose. >> Stay informed about: 86 4-Runner 22RE about to stall at a stop HELP! |

Yea, I'm gonna give the MAF a look through and cleaning. I just gotta jam
to the store and grab a can of MAF cleaner. I've been told that the
throttle body cleaner would probably work, but I don't wanna screw anything
up. Thanks for the suggestion >> Stay informed about: 86 4-Runner 22RE about to stall at a stop HELP! |
