Archived from groups: alt>autos>studebaker (more info?)

Hello fello Stude Addicts,
I am working on the rear brakes of my 62 Hawk GT. The car came with
drum brakes on front and rear.
I have dismantled the rear wheels and brakes and found different seals
from one side to the other. Drivers side came off with a soft
heavily greased seal, a ring pressing it into place, and a plate
housing it. What I call the "plate" is 1002-24 in Plat 10-1, pg299 of
the 1959-64 Chassis Parts Catalog. I have pictures of my parts and
plats Chassis Parts Catalog on this web site.
http://homepage.mac.com/tonyelliott/PhotoAlbum11.html
The driver's side had a round heavily greased soft seal and a ring
that presses into place when the plate is tightened into place. The
seal may be felt, I can not tell. It is softer than rubber.
The plate, seal, and ring on the passenger side are different. The
ring that presses the seal into the plate has a raised upper edge. It
seems to be a more exact fit to the plate's inside. Maybe it is
original and the driver's side has a replacement?
The passenger side seal is so firmly pressed into the plate that I
will have to pry it out. And I do not want to do that unless the seal
can be replaced if damaged. Was the plate and seal sold a one part?
The Chassis Parts illustrations are not clear.
I accidently purchased felt seals 1002-29 in Plat10-1, pg299. I had
a dyslectic moment on SASCO's web page when ordering paper gaskets.
The Catalog says these were used on all models. It appears to be they
are the same seals, but the illustrations do not show the ring that
presses it into place. Comparing them to what I removed they are
bigger in diameter, but do press into the plate.
Could anyone help me understand what I am looking at. Should I use
the new felt seals since I have them? Anyone need a pair of felt
seals, I have 4 of them.

Thanks
Tony

Thanks,
The piece I called the "plate" and it's matching flat back plate are
called the "WASHER and RETAINER, outer, R/A shaft bearing oil seal" in
the Chassis Catalog (1002-24 in Plat 10-1). And the felt washers I
have are titled "WASHER , outer, R/A shaft bearing oil-felt"
The Steve Allen parts; are the washer and ring all ready packed into
the "RETAINER"?
Should I go ahead and use the new felt washers? The old ones do not
have a really snug fit. And if so should put a little grease on them?
Tony

I would think the 62 is the same as the 63 (mine is a TT rear end) but the
outer seal was rebuildable but ones I purchased from Steve Allen's
Studebaker were all one unit, like you show in your pictures. They may
have adapted the inner seal which is usually the typical metal rubber seal
to work with the outer plate. If you pull the axle and backing plates to
repack the bearings you will see the inner seal. I think most all vendors
sell the seal as a complete unit rather than trying to sell rebuild kits.

Found them, thanks. Yup, the retainer, ring, and seal are pressed
together replaced as one piece. That would explain why the
illustrations did not show all three pieces in detail. I am going to
get a fresh pair. The old ones have a thin gap around the shaft when
they were in place.

Of coarse I still don't know how the felt washer "WASHER , outer, R/A
shaft bearing oil-felt" fits into this assembly. There were none
when I removed the drums, shoes, and back plate. Maybe the 62 Hawks
did not use them?

Thanks again
Tony

When I purchased mine it was all there the outer cover, the inner plate
and the felt washers. In Studebaker Int't they are listed as part number
197436 $17.00 each. (317-462-3124)you can call them and double check to be
sure but I would just pick up two to be on the safe side.

Tony, on each side, there are outer and inner seals and a new set is
relatively inexpensive. I believe they are all the same except for
later flanged axle equipped vehicles. I know that the outers can sort
of be rebuilt but to me it is just a time consumer and I always replace everything.

BTW, where are you located in Austin?

Anyone need some free felt washers "WASHER , outer, R/A
shaft bearing oil-felt"? It doesn't look like I can use them.
To JT, I live neat Oltorf and HWY 35.
