Hello fello Stude Addicts,
I am working on the rear brakes of my 62 Hawk GT. The car came with
drum brakes on front and rear.
I have dismantled the rear wheels and brakes and found different seals
from one side to the other. Drivers side came off with a soft
heavily greased seal, a ring pressing it into place, and a plate
housing it. What I call the "plate" is 1002-24 in Plat 10-1, pg299 of
the 1959-64 Chassis Parts Catalog. I have pictures of my parts and
plats Chassis Parts Catalog on this web site.

The driver's side had a round heavily greased soft seal and a ring
that presses into place when the plate is tightened into place. The
seal may be felt, I can not tell. It is softer than rubber.
The plate, seal, and ring on the passenger side are different. The
ring that presses the seal into the plate has a raised upper edge. It
seems to be a more exact fit to the plate's inside. Maybe it is
original and the driver's side has a replacement?
The passenger side seal is so firmly pressed into the plate that I
will have to pry it out. And I do not want to do that unless the seal
can be replaced if damaged. Was the plate and seal sold a one part?
The Chassis Parts illustrations are not clear.
I accidently purchased felt seals 1002-29 in Plat10-1, pg299. I had
a dyslectic moment on SASCO's web page when ordering paper gaskets.
The Catalog says these were used on all models. It appears to be they
are the same seals, but the illustrations do not show the ring that
presses it into place. Comparing them to what I removed they are
bigger in diameter, but do press into the plate.
Could anyone help me understand what I am looking at. Should I use
the new felt seals since I have them? Anyone need a pair of felt
seals, I have 4 of them.
Thanks
Tony
