Ok I checked out a 59 Lark 2dr HT V8 with auto trans at Avanti motors for a
guy in Fla. and he purchased it. He is having problems with the brakes
locking up and the stop light staying on. He says the lines are new, master
and wheel cylinders are new, hoses are new. I looked in my manual since I
thought if it were a std trans with hillholder that might be the problem
since it sounds like something is holding the pressure. I noticed that
automatic have an anti-creep solenoid and the light bulb stated flashing
(does not do that too often), the solenoid seems to get the positive side
off the ignition switch and is fused somewhere (fuse block?) and the common
side comes from a switch on the carb. Both the common and the positive side
run back to the solenoid, is this thing tucked or hidden somewhere? And am I
on the right track????

Have him adjust the master cylinder push rod as per the shop manual.
BTW, the anticreep option is rare and should not cause the problem you have.

This may be a long shot, but if the master cyl. bore was sleeved,
whoever did it may not have drilled out the compensating port. I had
that happen on a 63 Lark a number of years ago,...... the brakes would
work for 2-4 stops and get tighter each time, until they would not
release until the car sat for 15-30 minutes.
I finally figured out that the tiny compensating port was not drilled
through the new brass sleeve; once I drilled the tiny hole and
reassembled the master cyl., it worked fine.

I think this might be the problem since we had already gone down the
"brake pedal free play" route. If I am not mistaken the master cylinder
has two holes, the fluid feed hole and the port that you mention. I
forwarded your comment and hopefully that is the problem.

I had a new tandem master made by "Safe Line" that came with neither of
the small, (compensator?), ports drilled. The brake lights stayed on and
the car was hard to roll in the garage. I'm sure the brakes would have over
heated, if I had driven it very far. Those holes are supposed to let fluid
escape the cylinder and return to the reservoir, when the pedal is released.
Mine were countersunk, in the bottom of the reservoir, but not drilled all
the way through. They should be less than .040" in diameter. Because I
drilled mine with a .040" bit, (smallest I had handy), I get little
fountains in the reservoir when the pedal is released. That can make a
mess, when the cap is off. Of course you need to take the cylinder apart
before drilling; and clean the bore after.
