Hi all my turn to ask a few questions, my wife has seen a 94 440GLT.
Is the engine a Volvo engine as it bears a resemblance to a 2 litre GM
engine fitted to Camira's and Daewoo's in Aust. and it has large amount of
Delco/GM engine sensors.
The AC is not working in this car suspect gas loss is this model prone
to certain AC problems?
Thanking you all in advance Joe >> Stay informed about: Volvo 440 questions??? |

Should be a Renault unit mate. Nice little wet-liner engine about 1400/1700 ccs.
Cheers, Peter.

Yes - uk Volvo 440 were made in Born in Holland. We think that they put the
|Renault engines in all of them to try and upset the Brits who don';t like
the French!!!

Not nice at all. Dire infact, especially the early pre phase 2 ones.
The 1.4 is not related to the 1.7 . 1.4 is wet liner, 1.7 is dry liner.
Originally based on the 1.7 renault engine then for the phase 2 models,
volvo massaged it into a 1.6, 1.8 and 2litre which although were better than
the Renault original still not much to write home about. Around a 120k mile
lifespan, and the initial 2litre engines can drink oil due to oil ring /
valve seal problems.

4 different motors are used in the Volvo 440: the 1.6i, 1.7turbo, 1.8i
(we have it) and 2.0i liter. I think that some are Renault motors (I
know the 1.6i certainly is), and some Volvo. Maybe GM uses a Volvo
motor? The Volvo 440 is designed and made in the Netherlands,
originating from the older DAF cars. Most of those had Renault motors,
that is probably why Renault motors are used in the 440 too. Nothing
wrong with that, good motors!

The 2 liter may be a Volvo or a Renault design. The 360 series had a Volvo
B200 for a while.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Volvo 440 questions??? |

If it's the 1.8i, I'd steer clear. The 1.7's seem to be a lot more
reliable. The 1.8's had a strange single point injection unit, and mine I
had 2 years of problems which 3 separate garrages couldn't sort out (all
Volvo specialists, one was a Volvo dealer). Also very little knowledge on
this n/g, mainly I think cos it's a Renault engine. Don't know much about
the other engines tho, but I couldn't recommend the 1.8i. Also check for
build quality - the 440's aren't great for this... though 94 isn't the
earliest, so might well be ok by then.
