Ok, got new tyres put on at Costco, who insisted on rotating wheels front to
back as it was "more than their job's worth" not to do so (Michelin trained
to level 1!). Drove on to the motorway, then the orange ALB dash lamp came
on. Got home and noticed the ALB sensor wire (at least that's what I think)
on front driver side loose and probably been brushing against tyre. part of
the sleeve had been rubbed through and the wire was exposed. Taped it up and
secured it as it should have been, but beacon still on.

I reckon they must have got some crud into one of the sensors or something.
Sound reasonable? Comments and/or advice guys?

And are you looking at the abs warning or brake pad wear indicator?

Sorry for any confusion guys. It's the orange lamp with the skidding car
diagram on it, like the skid hazard road sign. So it must be the ABS then.

Am I right in saying that ALB is Anti-Lock Brakes and ABS is Anti-lock
Braking System?

If the above is true, what is the difference?

BTW, the brakes feel, umm... 'different'. And I feel I have to press harder
than before.

ABS is only an additional feature. If it fails, the normal operation of the
brakes is not affected at all.
Very little is needed to disrupt the ABS and turn the warning light on.
Sensor failure and/or dirt is more than enough.
You can measure the sensors' resistance, to find out if they are OK. Not
sure what it should be Smile. The 605 (Bendix) allows adjustment of the ABS
sensor to the toothed ring on the driveshaft, but I do not know if the 406
is the same.
I can not see that changing the tyres would affect the ABS. The components
are sheltered and not in the way of tyre changing. The wires are held out of
harms way by clips.
If you find that you need a new ABS sensor, check eBay.

It is.

I've heard of such cases, where badly fit rims knocked the wire and so,
involved the ABS fault.
Easy step, remove wheels and check for damaged wires.
