My 1996 diesel peugeot 205 has plenty of diesel in the tank and has a
battery that has plenty of juice. However, when I go to start the car
absolutely nothing happens. The engine does not turn over what so ever
and all the lights on the dash go out. This problem happens only
sporadically and completely randomly with seemingly no warning. Quite
often after leaving the car for an hour or so the car will be able to
start again. However, on the latest occasion the car does not want to
start no matter how long I leave it.

I would be really grateful if someone might be able to give me an idea
of what could be wrong.

Sounds like a loose cable somewhere. I've had a problem in the past with a
cable to the starter motor fracturing which gave odd symptoms and was hard
to fid as the fracture was under the insulation. In your case I would be
incline to check the battery connections first. Take them off, clean them
and replace them securely.
