I was asked if I've changed the Timing-Belt on my K reg. 205 Pug which has
101000 on the clock, and although I have had the car over four years, the
answer is no, As I bought the car second-hand I don't know if it has been
changed at any time? My next door neighbours car (not a Peugeot) has just
had a Timing-Belt snap on him and he now fears that considerable damage has
been done to the Valves etc, and unless he tries to fix it himself, he will
be looking at a huge bill? How can I tell if my 205 needs a new Timing-Belt
and does anyone have any idea how much a garage would charge to do the job?
I don't do a lot of driving in the 205, probably about 3000-4000 miles a
year. >> Stay informed about: 205 Timing Belt |

The way to 'know' is based on miles travelled (not many in your case) or
time (at least 4 years in your case). As it's been more than 4 years and
you are not exactly certain.... change it. The cost of it snapping is far
more than replacing the belt... If the belt does snap when you are driving
you cause or be involved in an accident, just not worth it for the cost of
a timing belt.

Thanks Neil, I wouldn't know how to change the belt myself, so I would be
given it to a garage to do the work. Have you any idea how much this would
cost including the cost of the Timing-Belt? I don't want to be robed as I
don't have a clue what a garage would charge for this type of job?

I paid £90 to get my 205 D Turbo belt fitted 2 years ago, I would say this
was a fair price and wouldn't want to pay anymore.

Must be over a Hundred Quid by now Andy? It's not as easy as changing a
Fan-Belt it,s a big expensive job. Can't make up my mind what to do now,
should I leave it to chance and hope it's OK or get it done just in case it
breaks?

I've just been quoted £75 by an independant peugeot specialist for my 205D, including the belt.
You should always get the belt replaced if you don't know how old it is. If it breaks it can be really expensive (>£500) to fix everything. >> Stay informed about: 205 Timing Belt |

Sorry mindwipe, I thought you meant the size of the engine? I think the
engine is a TU 1360cc (year September 1991)

it will take a good mechanic about an hour to fit it
its the easy one of the bunch
best way is to buy the belt from europarts or gsf parts and use a local guy
to fit it
heres the links for the parts

Hi,

Yup, perhaps two.

Sure, you even don't have to remove the right-front wheel to do it. BTW,
don't forget the tensionner.
My belt should be changed by July, damn' it's a XUD

Could you teach my mechanic how to do it? Because I've only ever been quoted 2 hours on my XUD7. In fact I'm normally quoted about £140 on the job which is presumably for hours and hours of work , £75 is the best I've ever been offered. >> Stay informed about: 205 Timing Belt |

Hi,

I'm not that fast ! One hour, not enough time to replace the tensionner ?
Two hours including tensionner isn't a so bad time I think.
