In the maintenance manual provided with the vehicle, stored in the glovebox,
has something I found interesting.
In regards to oil changes, other than the standard service mileage interval
requirement in which oil changes are required, a sentence indicating the the
oil and filter is required to be changed every 3 months. Said 3 month
interval for oil change requirement is noted earlier in the manual amongst
other gibberish that the owner may overlook.
I took the Focus to the Ford dealership for the oil change as 3 months had
expired. A sticker on the upper LH corner of the windshield from the
previous oil change indicated was also due by its date of next service. The
sticker was placed there by the Ford dealership service department. The
service manager that deals with regular interval maintenance indicated to me
that per the mileage, the car wasn't due for an oil change till 7500 mile
mark. I bought the vehicle used at 925 miles on the odometer. The Focus
had 2100 miles on it. Since taking possession, 3 months had expired. I
interjected that the maintenance manual also says 3 months as well. The
service manager said that its quite common for owners to go strictly by the
mileage interval for oil and filter changes. And, he said, he doesn't know
of any occurence of Ford voiding a warranty due to the 3 month interval
requirement on oil and filter changes being overlooked by the owner of the
vehicle. He further went into the expense of oil and filter changes every 3
months. I told him the Mobil 1 oil and Fram oil filter were in the trunk,
change the oil and filter. I paid $7.50 for the labor, and my maintenance
manual was updated in a section for unscheduled maintenace by the service
manager. As I was driving out, I noticed a new sticker on the upper LH side
of the windshield which indicated need for service in another 3 months...

The maintenance manual for a 2008 Focus does not make this claim (see
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pubs/content/~WO8FOC/~MUS~LEN/41/08frdmg3e.pdf
and/or see my response below)

Ford Motor Company did not put this sticker on the car. The dealership
did this in an effort to sell you unnecessary (or an least excessive)
services.

At least the Service Manager was honest. The Ford Motor Comapny
schedule calls for 7500 mile or 6 month oil changes for normal service
(see below).

It does not - see above or below.

Where is this Ford dealer. The Service Manager seems unusually honest.
He probably will be looking for work soon if the dealership owners
find out he is telling you the truth about oil change intervals.

Too bad the mechanics are placing a sticker in the window that does
not conform to the actual Manufacturer's requirements. You should pull
it off and throw it away. At the same time, I'd throw away the Fram
Filter as well. You can get a Motorcraft filter for a similar price
and it will be a much better filter. And if you are using Mobil 1, you
definitely don't need to do 3000 mile oil changes, or even 5000 mile
oil changes.
You are mistaken about Ford Motor company requiring a three month oil
change requirement. The following was copied directly from the pdf of
the 2008 Maintenance Guide:
From Page 5:
Maximum Oil Change Interval
*Normal Schedule: 7,500 miles or 6 months, whichever occurs first.
*Special Operating Conditions: 5,000 miles, 6 months, or 200 hours of
engine operation, whichever occurs first
see appropriate schedule on page 42.
From page 42:
Special Operating Conditions
Items Needing Special Attention
If you operate your Ford/Lincoln/Mercury primarily in one of the more
demanding Special Operating Conditions listed below, you will need to
have some items maintained more frequently. If you only occasionally
operate your vehicle under these conditions, it is not necessary to
perform the additional maintenance. For specific recommendations, see
your Ford or Lincoln Mercury Dealership Service
Advisor or Technician.
*Towing a trailer
.....
Every 5,000 miles or 6 months Change engine oil and replace oil filter
.....
*Extensive idling and/or low-speed driving for long distances as in
heavy commercial use such as delivery, taxi, patrol car or livery
.....
Every 5,000 miles or 6 months Change engine oil and replace oil filter
.....
*Operating in dusty conditions such as unpaved or dusty roads
.....
Every 5,000 miles or 6 months Change engine oil and replace oil filter
.....
Use of E85 50% of the time or greater (flex fuel vehicles only)
.....
Every 5,000 miles or 6 months Change engine oil and replace oil filter
.....
So unless you are using your car in one of the above manners, MOST OF
THE TIME, you only need to do routine oil changes every 7,500 miles or
6 months, whichever occurs first. And if you are operating under the
special operating conditions MOST OF THE TIME, then you still only
need to change your oil every 6 months or 5,000 miles. Nowhere can I
see that Ford Motor Company is recommending 3 month oil changes for a
2008 Focus.

You are correct, the mileage/times you referenced applies to ALL Ford Motor
Company vehicles sold in the US since 2007.

Not of direct help to you, but you might be interested to know that the
service interval for the Focus in the UK is 12,500 miles/1 year.
Mine is 10 years old, has 95K on it, and has always been serviced at those
intervals without problem.
VW have an option to use a more expensive engine oil. Using that allows you
to extend service intervals to 20,000 miles!
I've never understood why, with many journeys being non-stressful highway
miles, service intervals "your" side of the Atlantic are so short.

Ford ought to yank your warranty for putting on a Fram filter.
Seriously, have you ever cut one of those open and compared it to ANY
other filter on the market? If you have a spin on filter, your Fram
probably has the least amount of filter media than any other filter,
including the cheapie economy filters. Plus, the Fram probably has
cardboard end caps and your Fram will NOT have a silicone anti-drain
back valve.
Even if you have a cannister filter, you are paying WAY too much for
what you are getting. If you are driving a Ford, put on a Motorcraft
filter.
I know that I have convinced none of you Fram buyers out there, but
just cut one open and compare. >> Stay informed about: 2008 Ford Focus Maintenance interval |

Did you mean to imply that the 7500 mi / 6 month schedule applies to 2007
model year vehicles, or that it applies to US Ford vehicles AFTER the 2007
model year (in other words 2008 and 2009 model year vehicles)? For the
definitive answer, take a look at
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pubs/content/~WO7FSN/~MUS~LEN/40/07frdmg1e.pdf
(the 2007 Maintenance Guide for US Cars and Trucks).
For 2007, Ford was still calling for 5000 mile / 6 month oil changes under
"normal condition" or 3,000 mile / 3 month oil changes under "special
operating conditions" (same special conditions as in my prior post). I
checked, and there is not a TSB that modifies this recommendation for 2007
Model Year Vehicles. I can't see a reason the 2008 recommendations shouldn't
apply to 2007 vehicles, since in many cases nothing changed in the engine
compartment, but as far as I can tell Ford has not retroactively applied the
2008 recommendations to 2007 vehicles. I was particularly interested in
Fusions, since I have a 2007 Fusion, but wouldn't mind going to the longer
oil change intervals allowed for 2008 Fusions. The engine specifications for
the two years are identical. So are the oil specifications (both require
Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 or an equivalent SAE 5W-20 oil meeting Ford
specification WSS-M2C930-A). This being the case, I can't see why I
shouldn't go for the longer service intervals.

Service interval for my 2001 Focus wagon in Turkey is15.000 Kms. They use Mobil-1 semi synthetic
oil. Since I only cover less than 10.000 Kms a year, the car goes in to service once a year. Not a
single problems so far and I am more than happy with the car.

I owed a 2007 Mustang GT convertible that I purchased in August of 2006,
although you are correct the original recommendation was 5,000/6 months,
Ford subsequently sent owners an advisory that the interval was revised to
7,500/6 months.. If I had a 2007 Fusion I would do 7,500.
When I owned my fleet service business we did oil analyses and it showed the
average vehicle can easily be run up to the 7,500 almost every manufacturer
recommends today. I would note that the interval we used for state police
CVs that were used primarily for highway petrol work was 9,000/2MO

Just a clarification, I misunderstood the intial sticker for last servicing.
I still don't know what the 3 month interval is for noted on that previous
sticker. The mileage noted on that sticker is when the owner is expected to
return per the regular maintenance schedule. As I previously noted, the
Ford warranty service department placed this sticker in the LH upper corner
of the windshield. There is no presumption that Ford itself attached thsi
sticker, rather the Ford dealership where the warranty service department
exists, probably the mechanic as others stated.
The replacement sticker placed in the same location on the windshield has
another 3 month interval (unknown purpose), and same mileage noted for
regular maintenance interval. This replacement sticker was placed there
after the oil and filter change just done, again, probably by the mechanic
who changed the oil and filter.
Originally, I must have fabricated the 3 month interval in my head for oil
and filter change after noting same on the sticker. There is no such
requirement in the maintenance schedule any where as I just looked at it
again. Have concluded that as I have the ACYOA embedded in my brain, I
concluded the 3 month interval for minimum oil and filter change requirement
as a result. My apoligies for my mistake.
I will go back to the manager of the regular maintenance schedule operation
at the Ford dealership, and, demand they fill out the proper information on
that windshield sticker. Replacing the old sticker with the one that
reflects Ford's regular maintenance schedule for both time interval and
mileage. If they make the same "mistake" again, I may be contacting the
local BBB.
To another reply: Regarding Fram oil filters, I've been using them since I
owned my first car in 1971. My last vehicle, 1988 VW Fox wagon with 70,00
miles when purchased in 1993, had over 350,000 miles on when wrecked a few
months ago. I used the Fram provided filter for that vehicle and Mobil 1
oil. Changed the oil every 5000 miles. The VW is no longer in service due
to an accident and excessive cost in repairs. Yes, both the VW version and
the Focus version of the Fram oil filters have a bypass valve. Both have
spin-on filter canisters. In fact, all the Fram oil filters that I ever
used had a pictorial and/or text info with the bypass valve on the packaging
that I recall. Have no comment on the Fram oil filtering capacity compared
to other name-brand oil filters as I have no way of comparing them. Amount
of visible filter media could be misleading in actual filtering of the oil.
As far as mileage, at 2100 miles odometer reading, based on the last fillup
in gallons and trip odometer, she's getting a hair under 38 mpg. Most of my
driving is in a hilly area where I live. Speeds vary from 35-45 mph
mostly. I find the no options 08 Focus coupe a good replacement for the VW.
VW was getting 35 mpg under same conditions.
Thanks for all replies.

Curious They never sent me a letter for my 2007 Fusion. Without
supporting documentation, I will stick with the maintenace
recommendation that came with the car at least until the 60k warranty
expires. It seems that if Ford changed the recommendation for 2007
vehicles they would have updated it on the Ford websites or at least
issued a TSB to that effect. I checked all the publically accessible
Ford web sites, and they still show the originial 2007 recommendation
(5000/6 months, normal service). I even checked the Ford Owners
website and it is still calling for 5000 mile oil changes (for
Mustangs too). I wish I could get a copy of the letter. How long ago
did you get it?

I am am sure this is correct. I've sent of foil analysis a number of
times and have yet to get back one that said by oil was in need of
changing sooner (longest interval for me was only 7500 mile and that
was on a GM car with an oil life monitor).

Thanks to today's oil and emissions technology the oil stays cleaner longer
and is better managed in the crankcase then was the case just a few years
ago.

It was not too long after I bought the car in August of 2006. I left it
with the car when I traded it on the '09 in June. In my case I was
changing oil every six months, easier to remember than the miles when one
owns a lot of car. I average 15K on my daily driver annually in any event.
