2007 KIA Sedona Antifreeze

I really like the Kia Sedona with the 3.8 liter engine. It is quick
but also does not get very good gas mileage. I am trying to decide on
which Oil to use for the 1st oil change. They recommend 5W20 and I am
leaning toward Motorcraft Semi-synthetic oil with a 5,000 mile oil
change. I have found several people that have had this oil tested and
it has come back with low engine wear. Some say the 5W20 weight is
too thin and is recommended to show increased mileage. Any opinion on
the oil issue?

I previously owned a 98 Plymouth Grand Voyager 3.3 liter engine and
was pleased with this product except for the Transmission Problems.
It seems like the Kia is a little noiser than the Chrysler Products
but I hope to keep this van for at least 10 years so I hope it holds
up well.

A couple of things:

*If you are concerned about 5W20 oil, don't be. Ford and Honda have been
using this for much longer than Kia/Hyundai/Mitsubishi has. Nevertheless,
if it worries you, go to (and stick with) synthetic oil. I am on my third
Sedona. After taking one oil change with regular "dino" oil (to finish the
break-in process), I have used exclusively synthetic in all of them.

That seems to be about the best you can do for your engine. Often, an
Advance Auto Parts or Auto Zone has some kind of deal making synthetic cost
little or no more than regular oil. And while the 5W20 grade used to be
almost impossible to find, it is quickly getting onto the shelves.

*Your van should hold up very well. Remember - unlike the old Sedonas, this
one has a timing chain, not a belt. And Kia has been getting the build
quality better and better with each passing year.

*As for the transmission, the Mitsubishi-built transmission is in a whole
different and better universe than the clanky transmissions that all the
Chryslers have had in them. And this tranny is one of the easiest out there
to change tranny fluid. Just drain it (it has a drain bolt to do that with)
and refill it with Diamond ATF SPIII or Import Multi-Vehicle ATF every
30,000 miles. You should never have an issue with it then.
