Sorry, I meant stealership with the utmost of respect for what they do.

A guy has got to be able to poke fun at somebody, and a car dealership is as
good a place as any to be poking fun.

I agree, when there is cause.

However, I didn't see anything the dealer was doing wrong, in this case.

You're right, there's no indication they are doing anything wrong. Indeed,
it seems they gave the guy a loaner and got right to work trying to figure
out what is wrong.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been on vacation out in the
wilderness where there is no internet service.

I spent a week evaluating Big 2 Olds/Toyota's service operation back around
1990, and IMO, they were a class act at the time. Assuming it is under the
same ownership, it should still be the case.

Not all faults are stored in the onboard computer, especially if a sensor
gives a signal to the computer that falls within the normal operating range,
even though the signal may not be the correct value. If the regional office
in Denver is involved, there are people who are much more current working on
the problem than I am.

If I were working on the car, I would check the master cylinder pushrod to
make sure it is not out of adjustment. Also check the condition of the
brake hoses if there was any recent brake work done on the car and the hose
got kinked. I'm thinking that it is something
mechanical or hydraulic rather than electronic.

So far no solution. Service manager going to drive car
today...Surprised that he had not been told about this...Good thing we
decided to ignore the service tech when he said it was not necessary
to speak to the service manager.

Ray, he said that someone is coming in from the Denver office
tomorrow..

I asked if he ever gets a vehicle that cannot be fixed...He said no he
doesn't but I don't know what the truth may be on that. Can such a
thing happen even after regional looks at the vehicle? Service
manager said we are not being charged for anything at the moment. Not
sure what that might mean...

It is beginning to look like a production problem....On the other
vehicles with this issue, there seems to have been some kind of fix
between a certain VIN series...the VIN on our car is outside that
series having been built after the series of VIN described by NHTSA
for this issue.....

Thanks to all who have offered advice on this....Stay tuned...it is
not over yet...

Sincerely,

Chuck Harris

"Can't be that..." Yeah, Right, Suuuuuure.

They get a bad production run of a part, they may be able to narrow
down the dates the bad parts were made, and the dates the *majority*
of cars made with those parts were produced - but not account for that
one carton or pallet of parts that got misplaced in shipping or in the
warehouse, and used on the line a few weeks or months later.

If they say "No, it couldn't be that, your car was built two months
later..." you don't rule it out without checking.

Possibly the district service manager, hopefully it is the field technical
specialist whose job it is to fix problem cars.

Toyota does not charge dealers for the services of its managerial and
technical staff. If the vehicle is out of warranty coverage, the dealership
may charge for the technician to assist the factory staff. During my tenure
with Toyota at 2 different regional offices, we never ran across a vehicle
we could not fix. I suppose it could happen, but the technical folks at
Toyota are pretty sharp.

Once this is all figured out, I would send a report the the NHTSA. If
this is affecting another range of vehicles, I am sure that they would
appreciate a heads up. Worst case is that they are already aware of the
issue, and they have another report to add to the file.

I filed a complaint with NHTSA and received a case number from
them...Not letting go on this one. I was told that the field service
guy is coming from Denver on the 3rd.

Thanks for the info Ray...Spoke to service manager today and asked the
same question. He said they haven't come across anything they
couldn't eventually fix...The car has 46K on it but I don't know if
they will consider this a warranty item. I hope so.
I have filed a complaint with NHTSA.

Just spoke to service at dealership.
Regional rep was at the dealership and said steering angle sensor
failed and it will be replaced and they updated the ECM according to a
Toyota field bulletin. If there was a steering angle sensor problem
would that mean also that there is a yaw rate sensor and vector
tracking system involvement? I wonder what the chances would be of
this happening again.

And it is important to note that the input I received from the
contibutors in the NG was instrumental in me being able to speak like
I knew what I was talking about and I really believe it encouraged the
service folks to give me an honest appraisal of the situation.

Again, thank you, and I will update the group as I find out more.
