Anyone have a solution to cruise control not staying on.
It will initialize OK, but quits/turns off erratically and often.

You might want to check is you have any vacuum leaks.

OK, I can do that with my ears, listen for hissing sound. I notice there is
no vacuum line to the
cruise control module.
Thanks

This is sometimes caused by a brake pedal switch which is marginal or
inaccurately adjusted. It can also be because the brake pedal sometimes does
not come up all the way. Any of these can cause the switch to activate and
shut off the cruise control like it does when you press the brake pedal. Of
course, it can also be caused by intermittent contact in any of the cruise
control wiring.

Makes sense, Don. I tried to see the brake switch, but it is really up in
there.
Maybe I'll try again. There are probably at least two switches, unless the
same switch operates the brake lights as well, I don't think so.
I took the engine compartment cruise control module out once and
looked inside. It looked clean in there, saw nothing that could be
the problem. I was thinking there might be slack on the cable that
goes to the throtle body, but there seemed to be none, there was
a little on the accelerator cable.

Cable slack would be very unlikely to have any effect on your problem. There
are probably two brake pedal switches, though they might be combined in one
physical housing. Get a mirror about 6 inches across and either a good
flashlight or a flourescent trouble light in order to see well under the
dash. You can point the flashlight into the mirror if it is easier.

Make sure its not teh brake light switch.
If it quits and won't re-engage, lift the brake pedal with your toes, and
re-try the cruise. If it works, The brake lifght switch needs cleaned,
adjusted, or serviced in some manner.

For the "check vacuum leak" crowd GM hasn't had a vacuum servo cruise
control since the late 80's

I've tried to pull up on the brake pedal when it won't engage, it doesn't
seem
to effect it. I've tried slowing down, speeding up to re-engage, no luck.
Today I looked at the two switches at the top of the brake lever and the
flat metal that the two switches work on. They are little buttons that go
'out' when the brake is pushed. There is a plastic panel that has to be
moved to get at the switches, and even then, the switches are about
impossible
to work on. I didn't see any play or obvious problem with the switches and
I didn't try to unplug one of them to determine which was for the brake
lights
and which for the cruise control.
I suspect the cruise control module in the engine compartment is the
problem.
I've taken it out and looked inside where the cable goes in to it. There
are
plastic gears in there is about all I was able to determine.
Thanks for the tips.
