Hi,

I have a 2000 Jetta VR6.

On my way in to work this afternoon, the car was bucking a little bit.
I noticed the temp gauge was at the lowest level.

On my way home, I didnt get any bucking, but my temp gauge went to
after halfway and the back down to the lowest level.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Brian

If you mean way cold then the ECT needs replaced. Bucking, then maybe a coil
pack is going bad. Suggest getting engine and instrument scanned for fault
codes.

Hey guys/gals

This is very interesting. I have a 2000 VW Jetta V6 that had the same problem. I had my temp gauge replaced a few months ago at a cost of a few hundred $$$. My temp gauge was doing the up and down thing for almost two years but I thought it was normal. Recently I mentioned it to my mechanic and he said it probably malfucntioned and needed to be replaced. Then after replacing the temp guage my engine light kept coming on intermittently for a few months. My local mechanic said that sometimes when it's damp out it will make the engine light go on and off, he said I should give it a few days which I did. After a few days it seemed okay so I took it for an Epa test and it failed. The diagnostic machine at the EPA showed the catalytic converter was bad and they gave me a list of repair shops that would fix it. My mechanic was on the list, and he is an honest man, he told me the catalytic converter was under a warranty mandated by a federal law that covers catalytic converters for 80,000 on all cars. So I took it to the dealer for the repair. Otherwise it would have cost me over $1000 to replace. The service technician at the dealer also told me my coil pack was burned out and my spark plugs needed to replaced, and that it would cost $900. I told them NO!

Since then I have done my research. A bad coil pack will make the catalytic converter go out and cause very bad engine problems, the malfunctioning up and down problem with the temp gauge is one of the indicators of a bad coil pack. I have learned VW made a recall for the coil pack on 2001 to 2003 cars with a V6 2. 8 liter engines. The problems I have had prove I have this defected coil pack in my 2000 Jetta. My car is currently at the dealer for a suspension problem. I have decided to give the dealer an oppurtunity to honor replacing the coil pack. However if the dealer will not replace the coil pack I have started the process of contacting an attorney. Are there any other 2000 Jetta owners here with this problem? If so did you get resolution?
