Chevrolet and the Pleasures of Owning one.
We have a 1999 Chevy Blazer LS. It has always had a knocking which sounded
like the exhaust was banging up against the floor of the vehicle. The
dealer said it would subside after the break in.
As soon as the Warrenty ran out the transmission went out. $2500.00 (So
did my friends in his 1999 Astro). We took it into our local dealer (not
where we bought it) and had the transmission replaced. We asked about the
knocking. They said it was the catalytic converter and it had to be
replaced. No other symptoms, no bad smell, nothing wrong running wise.
They replaced a perfectly good $1250.00 catalytic converter and poked
holes into it to make sure we could not call them on it (I asked for it
back). The water pump went out right after the warrenty and so did the air
conditioning pump. I bought a water pump from NAPA and an AC pump from
Chevrolet. They installed both (at seperate times). We used the AC twice
during the Warrenty period. Once to make sure it worked and one other
time. As soon as the Warrenty went out on the AC pump so did the AC pump
go out again. And that knocking it has had since new? It is still there
and they don't know what it is. My advice is buy a Cheverolet only if you
like to throw money at it. They say boats are holes in the water you throw
money into. The Chevrolet is a canyon in the driveway you throw money
into.

You must have got one built on monday or friday. If you paid $1200 for a converter, they saw you coming and ripped you off on that one. On the A/C, actually if you never do use it the seals in it can dry up (any brand too) and the freon can leak out (which also cools compressor too) and lead to early compressor failure, I have seen it happen before and on non chevies too. Hard to say on tranny but most of them fail to heat more than anything as factory tranny coolers are not very good. I have a 89 GMC 4x4 burb with 172k on it and tranny still works great and so does A/C. BTW, my wife bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee (Chrysler product) new in the fall of the year and the A/C had to be replaced next spring so it can happen to any of them plus they never did fix it completely because I still have to top it off every year for peak performance.
