I'm sure I've seen this mentioned here before, so maybe someone can set
me right:

My Hi-Lux Surf was imported from Japan and has a 'double DIN' Toyota
audio unit fitted from new. Everything works fine except the CD player,
which smoothly rejects every audio CD I put into it. I think this may
be some sort of brainless copyright protection system, based on world
'zones.'

I'd hate to have to junk the unit and increase my 'carbon footprint'
even more, so does anyone know of a fix or workaround for the problem?

Does it reject a "cleaning" cd with the small wiping strip as well?
Also,if the unit never has a chance to spin a normal cd to load
initial info, I would guess that it has nothing to do with preset zones.

Thanks for the response - I'll check that tomorrow.

Thanks for your response. It rejects those too - in about 4 secs, same
as other CDs. Seems to work perfectly and smoothly, apart from gently
refusing any CD. Any other thoughts welcome!

FIXED!!!

Here's the info for anyone with the same problem:

There are *NO* pre-set region/country codes or lock-outs on CDs or CD
players and never were (although there are on DVDs) - it's an 'urban
myth.' Apart from possibly needing an in-line converter for FM radio
frequencies, a Japanese combined CD/Tape/radio unit should work
anywhere in the world.

CD players that don't work in imported used Japanese vehicles are
probably just dirty (from sitting around - on the boat or at the dock).
Laser/diode/mirror damage is possible but very unlikely.

I ran a non-solvent CD cleaner disk for 4 or 5 minutes, stuffing it
back in every time it was ejected. It finally stayed put for about 10
seconds. Then inserted a retail audio CD - working perfectly.

Hope this is of use and thanks again to all who offered advice.
