Know what you mean, however my 12v socket is in the open stowage tray
directly underneath the heater controls.
What I've added to mine though is a brodit mount and cradle seated on
the right hand side of the steering wheel, and wired directly into the
car using the lighting wiring behind the light switch...
Also, I've just put a 12v socket in the boot using a kit that Ford sell
that you splice into the existing 12v socket and I've run the long
cable all the way into the boot behind the trim. I use this to power
my bluetooth gps unit and have an external aerial that sits on the
parcel shelf so no one can see the flashing lights. Seems ot work very
well...
